In November 2007, the San Bernardino campus started up a newly constructed well to provide water for landscape irrigation. The well currently produces approximately 40% of the total irrigation supply, serving the southeast end of campus, including the Water Conservation Demonstration Garden, the athletic fields, and landscaped areas around the Parking Structure East, the Student Recreation & Fitness Center, Jack H. Brown Hall, and the College of Education, Health & Physical Sciences, Physical Education buildings.
The benefits of utilizing well water include:
- not irrigating with treated potable water – less chemicals used and soil and plants are healthier;
- net energy savings by not processing and importing potable water from off-campus;
- an approximately 96% savings in cost per unit to the campus!
